British destroyers reportedly sunk every ship in Narvik harbor with five more German destroyers claimed. Norwegian routes say British troops reached Ankenes and a base was established at Ballangen as the garrison is cut off. Eyewitnesses describe Germans ferrying crews ashore amid the town’s fall.
London reports British air and naval actions along a 1200 mile German Baltic to Arctic line aiming to sever Norway access. Britons mined Skagerrak and Kattegat coasts, bombed Baltic bases, damaged ships, and claimed 36 Nazi vessels sunk while suffering 10 plane losses and two sea crashes.
Romania suspends loading of freight cars for Germany and halts Danube oil barges, signaling a possible embargo. The move follows Germany’s list of restricted Romanian commodities and prompts an urgent cabinet meeting to prepare a list of embargoed materials for domestic needs. Germany is expected to demand demobilization to boost German factory and field activity.
The Montana water conservation board asked the Federal Bureau of Reclamation to conduct a reconnaissance survey of the upper Missouri river basin. Governor Roy E. Stockholm April 12 Norways fighting forces press to complete a steel ring around Oslo the German held capital as seven Nazi warships are reported bottled up along the fjord. Oslo fronts extend from Moss to Halden with fortifications rising in the northwest. Norway admits German control of Kristiansand Stavanger Bergen and Narvik. Reports claim four destroyers sunk at Narvik though unconfirmed.
Berlin reports Germany has all but abandoned hope of a frictionless Norwegian government under Premier Nygaardsvold. Negotiations with King Haakon will continue while occupation proceeds on a systematic schedule. British air raids on Norway and Schleswig-Holstein are noted with warnings of reprisals.
London reports a British source says Danish ships are technically enemy and may sail only under Allied flags. Prizes would be seized and used by Allies, with Danish crews allowed to serve under British or French flags. Compensation to Danish owners to come later under war constraints. ENVOY IN SWEDEN. Montana range feed prospects and cattle condition improved markedly in March per the federal Agricultural Marketing Service. Stock water shortages largely disappeared, with sheep and lamb condition mixed across districts. Range condition rose to 86 percent of normal on April 1, cattle 89 percent, and sheep 89 percent, all near prior months’ levels.
