Daladier and Chamberlain prepare declarations to deter German Italian expansion toward the Dardanelles while leaving room for appeasement. Britain and France vow unity and readiness as war planes patrol the east coast in a tense atmosphere ahead of an extraordinary parliamentary session.
Bainbridge Colby, secretary of state in Wilson's 1920 cabinet, told at the New York Sons of the American Revolution dinner that much said lately is inexcusable. He warned against Europe’s influence steering U S policy and urged restraint to avoid war or ruinous decisions.
New York April 12. The contract to sell Tennessee Electric Power Co. properties to Tennessee Valley Authority and various municipalities was completed today. TVA will pay Commonwealth and Southern about 43 million dollars for the electric properties, with municipalities and rural cooperatives set to buy local systems for 37 million, bringing the basic price to 80 million after adjustments. Negotiations to acquire C and S northern Alabama and Mississippi properties will begin in about two weeks.
Mussolini signals Albania’s union with Italy by presenting exiled King Zog’s crown to King Vittorio Emanuele. The Albanian national assembly offers the crown as symbol of a newly conquered state joining Fascist Italy and retaining outward sovereignty.
Chinese Nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-shek struck rear Japanese positions across Henan Kiangsu and Kaifeng. They claimed capture of Kaifeng station and surrounded Tung-Hsu garrison, with 400000 troops behind lines aiming to cut supply routes toward Changsha and Hengyang.
Reports from Warsaw diplomatic circles say Germany renewed demands for Danzig and a strip of the Polish corridor. Berlin allegedly sought to bluff Poland into neutrality or bargain by loosening ties with Britain and France. Demands for Danzig a motor road across the corridor under German sovereignty and for the cession of Bogumim were refused. Foreign Office denied repetition. Beck met with British and French ambassadors.
Berlin reports Poland may publish German demands tied to the mutual assistance accord. Officials say publication would prove the demands are not exorbitant and do not threaten Poland's independence or territorial integrity. Britain Netherlands and Roosevelt are criticized in today's propaganda wave.
Federal agencies acted to guard their buildings against coal shortages amid month long talks between union reps and bituminous operators to resume 338 000 Appalachian miners. West Point ordered strict conservation halting power machinery and Treasury assessed hospital coal sufficiency. Mayor LaGuardia pressed John L. Lewis for assurances that essential city services would be protected.
Charity Catherine Hinch Taylor, 78, longtime Alder Gulch and Ruby resident since 1865 and member of the Montana Society of Pioneers, died after a three week illness at her daughter Mrs. Leslie Gilman’s home in Ruby. Her son Charles H. Taylor of Butte reported the death, noting she was born in Springfield Illinois on September 13 1860 and came to Montana with her parents in 1865.
Federal agents arrested 13 persons from New York to Oklahoma in a major narcotics sweep in Kansas City. H J Anslinger called Kansas City the capital of narcotics distribution in the Midwest and highlighted a Kansas City police officer among the arrestees. The roundup broadens the war on vice as lawmakers consider police reform measures under state control.
Eleven year old Joe Ferko of Butte rode a freight train to Great Falls with his dog Duke in search of an aunt living there. He spent the night in the county jail awaiting pickup as officers plan to contact his relative tomorrow.
Washington April 12 The House labor committee unexpectedly decides to hold public hearings on revisions to the Wagner act. Rep Ramspeck hints at an amendment to replace the three-man National Labor Relations board with a five-member geographically chosen body. The move follows prior expectations that the Senate would lead.
The United States plans a large Atlantic fleet review off the Virginia capes on April 27. About 70 warships will pass in a 16 mile formation led by eight battleships heading to the New York world’s fair after a two day stay in the Yorktown Hampton Roads area. Foreign naval attaches will observe the spectacle as part of a broader display of American naval strength amid global tensions and arms activity.
New York reports the death of Willard Huntington Wright known as Van Dine creator of Philo Vance. He collapsed at his home at 241 Central Park West and died of heart disease at age 51. Cremation planned for tomorrow.
A 17 year old, Buddy Merrell, killed himself with a gymnastic strap in his family garage, haunted by war fear after reading current crisis reports and hearing Roosevelt's warning. His mother found the body after he complained of illness and had headed to Franklin High School.
Trailblazers and guides of the Silver Bow Covered Wagon Expedition will be ready to hit the trail next Monday driving toward a goal of 22 000 with which the Butte Y M C A will be able to continue its work of supplying community health and happiness during the next year. Dates for the annual financial campaign of the popular community center and leaders of the seven outfits were announced yesterday by Malcolm Gillis, veteran worker for the Y and president of the Roundup club. The campaign will open with the Roundup club dinner at the Y next Monday evening at 6 30 o clock and close the evening of April 27 with a dinner dance. A total organization of 426 persons will be required to fill the wagons of the various divisions.
Scattered showers or snow flurries are expected Thursday across Montana with colder conditions east of the divide. Friday brings partial cloud cover and milder conditions as the system moves on.
The U S secret service announced a major gold coin conspiracy with reach from San Francisco to New York. Indictments against 13 men in custody were to be sought. Morris Anolik detained in New York shipped about $100000 in coins for disposal. Authorities suspect coins were melted and resold to the U S mint.
Rev. Paris E. Wells of Dillon will serve as moderator of the Butte Presbytery and Mrs. C. W. Disbrow of Missoula was reelected president of the Butte Presbyterial society. Delegates from 15 Western Montana cities attended the closing sessions. Wells succeeds Dr. E. J. Groeneveld who has been moderator for a year and clerk for 46 years. Dr. John F. MacLean of Missoula and Rev. F. C. Phelps of Deer Lodge were named temporary clerks.
