Mrs Evelyn Thomas was convicted of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of her sweetheart Roy Barr by a Butte district court jury after eight hours of deliberation. Sentencing set for Saturday at 10 am by Judge T E Downey. maximum penalty ten years.
Mickey Lynn Ritter, 20 months, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack Ritter of Meaderville, survived a near drowning in Silver Bow creek after neighbor Fred Guidi, 62, pulled her from the icy water. The rescue followed screams from playmate Sandra Bugni as the two children wandered toward the creek. Mickey was treated at St James hospital and later released. she played at home that evening.
Everett M. Dirksen former congressman won the Republican nomination for United States senator in the Illinois primary to oppose incumbent Democrat Scott Lucas in November. Lucas was renominated without opposition while Dirksen faced weak city challengers Lar Daly and William J. Baker.
A B 29 from the 509th bomb wing crash near Sandia secret weapons base east of Albuquerque with 13 crew aboard. Officials said the aircraft went down around 9 41 p m and fire and explosion were reported. no survivors announced.
Bainbridge Colby, last secretary of state under Woodrow Wilson, died Tuesday night at his Bemus Point New York home at age 80. He served March 22 1920 to March 4 1921 and is known for the note refusing to recognize Soviet Russia a stance he never abandoned.
The Montana Education Board voted six to four to terminate Northern Montana College Havre President Guy H. Vande Bogart after a closed three hour session. Members cited non cooperation with other units and the chancellor. Vande Bogart plans legal counsel and response.
The Italian freighter Maria Paolina rescued the entire crew of the Norwegian ship Geisha after an explosion forced abandonment off the Newfoundland coast. About 680 miles southeast of St Johns the Coast Guard confirmed all 30 men were unharmed and no further details were released.
Former Communist leader Louis F. Budenz agreed to testify Thursday April 20 on Senator McCarthy's charges against Owen Lattimore. McCarthy stated Budenz would illuminate the Lattimore case as Budenz, a Fordham University professor, denounces ongoing Soviet links.
Four unions and Anaconda Copper reach a contract amend ment running to June 30 1951. The pact includes a five cent hourly wage rise retroactive to March 1 and enhanced hospital and medical coverage for employees and dependents. Holiday pay qualifications are revised and the agreement was approved by referendum votes.
Heavily armed robbers struck the Farmers and Stockmen's Bank in Valier taking 15 200 in cash after tying up president Nels Swanson. He reported two masked men entered at 8 20 am MST and escaped in a muddy light colored Buick. Sheriff Monson ordered roadblocks and aircraft aided the search with National Guard planes from Great Falls and private planes.

A 16 year old boy previously placed on probation for arson confessed to setting about a dozen fires on the east side within a month. The youth, taken into custody after a Saturday blaze at Jim's Swap Shop, is held at the county jail pending further investigation. He had been paroled on his parents promise to move him away. Firefighters battled flames at multiple sites including a barber shop a limestone shop a residence and sheds causing near panic among residents. A major blaze on East Park required extensive hose lines and one firefighter was injured. damages have not been estimated.
Senate Democratic Leader Scott Lucas said the Marshall plan bill will take priority over FEPC this week after talks with President Truman. He stressed the administration still aims to pass FEPC this year, despite southern opposition and possible delays.
Moscow reported that a United States four engine bomber disappeared over the Baltic after entering Soviet airspace and exchanging fire with Red fighters. The missing Navy patrol plane with 10 aboard was unarmed on a Copenhagen round trip. US officials denied involvement of any armed Air Force plane and pledged investigation. Tass charged US forces with Danish airbase occupation under pretext of a missing bomber.
Rural census work in Butte district is over half done as enumerators travel by snowmobiles, jeeps, horses, and snowshoes to eight mountain regions. By week one of the 1950 census, 35 000 people were interviewed and 12 000 homes visited, with farmers offering transport aid to reach remote farms.
Roy and Mrs. Hayden, longtime residents of the Minnie Jane mine caretakers’ quarters near Butte, were counted for the first time by census enumerator Rubye Cashell after she followed a lead along a mine road. They had lived there 25 years without being listed in prior counts.
Senator Vandenberg was reported in satisfactory condition after an operation to remove a tumor near his spinal cord. The 66 year old Michigan Republican had a previous operation seven months earlier involving part of his left lung last October.
In Portland on Tuesday Municipal Judge J. J. Quillin fined Lewis H. Sherrill 21, $50 after he kissed a census taker who came to his door. The judge admonished that when the census taker knocks, you answer the questions.
Butte expects fair to partly cloudy skies through Wednesday with occasional afternoon showers. Temperatures reach a high around 55 and a low near 32 on Wednesday morning. Across Montana west of Divide expect cloudy with scattered showers and highs in the 50s to 60s.
