New York April 11 supporters of Gov Franklin D Roosevelt expect 80 democratic national convention votes to fall into his column this week boosting their estimate of his strength to 235 a third of the nomination. The Roosevelt campaign leaders note their current 155 pledged delegates are conservative and exclude any unpledged ballots.
Ric Whitney, president of the New York Stock Exchange, blamed the public for violent price swings during the inflationary pre-1929 period and rejected bear raid theories. Testimony opened a Senate Banking Committee inquiry into the exchange as Whitney defended short selling amid a packed room of spectators. He said data on short accounts ending April 8 would be supplied the following Friday.
A middle aged woman fled a Greenwich bakery after offering a $20 Lindbergh ransom note identified by the proprietor as KB 03387539A. The suspect arrived in a green sedan with a chauffeur and was confronted by Mrs. De Cornille who warned it matched the posted ransom list.
At Geneva on April 11 United States envoy Hugh Gibson proposed a plan to abolish heavy mobile guns tanks and gases in a bid to speed disarmament. Britain Germany and Italy showed approval while France's Andre Tardieu called the plan insufficient and blocked immediate action. The proposal was sent to the steering committee for further debate.
Helena April 11 A special State Board of Education session ordered a 10 per cent horizontal cut in totals for the Greater University and related institutions. Executives must decide how to apportion the reduction as budgets are reviewed amid previously reduced income and ongoing expenditure limits.
Dr John M Flude of Philadelphia told a Silver Bow Medical Society meeting that study groups are needed to control cancer. The county society adopted a resolution backing the American Society for the Control of Cancer program. A cancer control committee was formed last month with Drs H D Kistler J R E Sievers and J C Shields.
The murder charge against 72 year old Joe Dhooghe is dismissed as his death ends the case. He died Sunday at the county hospital from a wasting lung disease after his trial was vacated previously. He is to be buried in St Patrick's cemetery beside relatives including his son and wife.
London April 11 Britain and Ireland faced a near historic deadlock as Eamon de Valera seeks to abolish the oath to the crown. J H Thomas states Britain reaffirms the Anglo Irish treaty and promises released correspondence will show British and Irish positions on the oath and land annuities.
