Kate Tess Shodair arrived in Philipsburg in 1878 with her son Louis and built a confectionary, bakery, and candy shop in Butte. By 1897 Louis had bought land for 12 000 dollars to erect the Shodair Block at 48 W Park St housing Symons Department Store and Lutey's warehouse, marking the family as prominent merchants and ranchers in Montana.
