In Butte a small snow event disrupted spring expectations as a quarter inch fell with .01 inch of precipitation and northwest winds around 20 mph. The five day outlook shows little change with scattered snow showers and highs near 35 to 40 degrees, lows in the 20s, and temperatures about five degrees above normal.
In Richmond Indiana a devastating blast and ensuing fire leveled much of downtown. Rescue crews recovered additional bodies bringing the death total to 46 with over 100 injured. Investigators probe Marting Arms Co basement gunpowder stock and possible gas leak as a contributing factor.
School trustees meet tonight at 8 in the School Administration Building to canvass unofficial Saturday election results and set a date for a reorganization meeting. New trustees elected are Allen R. McKenzie and John W. Whelan. Unofficial totals show Whelan 5,642 and McKenzie 4,905 with Mrs. Kneebone also listed.
Lester Swanson 59, prominent Livingston businessman, died in a one car crash Sunday morning on U S 89 near the Big Creek Bridge. Montana Highway Patrolman Leroy Keto and Park County Sheriff Don Guintoni investigate. Swanson served on the Montana Highway Commission under Gov. J Hugo Aronson and was the county's second traffic fatality in 48 hours. His death brings Montana's 1968 highway toll to 42, matching last year’s on this date.
U S sources report President Johnson has further restricted air strikes on North Vietnam to a strip up to the 19th parallel, narrowing from the DMZ to about 170 miles and leaving the 20th parallel as an open option. Bombers have operated within the 145 mile DMZ to Winh City sector for four days.
Federal troops rushed to Baltimore and Chicago as three days of looting and arson spread from Detroit to Pittsburgh. National Guardsmen patrolled Hill District after state governors declared emergencies. nationwide toll included dozens dead and thousands arrested amid King assassination riots. The Kennedys visited a devastated area in Washington as Palm Sunday observed.
U S Marines at Khe Sanh are relieved by a brigade of the 1st Air Cavalry Division with helicopter troop-carrying and rocket units. The move comes as the besieged garrison plans to fight elsewhere. Enemy activity remains along the A Shau to Hue corridor with B52 raids targeting valley build-ups. Russian Zin trucks have been seen moving west from A Shau toward Hue.
Voters across Montana approved most school levies while rejecting several. Flathead Valley Community College levy failed in Kalispell Whitefish and Columbia Falls. Columbia Falls approved an elementary levy but rejected a high school levy. Livingston approved elementary levies but rejected high school funds, risking Park Senior High and Livingston Junior High ninth grade. Other results include Missoula District 1, Helena, Billings, Laurel, Great Falls and Whitefish levies with mixed outcomes.
The South Vietnamese National Assembly rejected neutralism and any coalition with Communist participation. It declared peace negotiations deemed invalid if not acceptable to the government. The resolution was adopted by voice vote after a two day debate.
Mrs. Martin Luther King outlined final funeral plans and tentatively scheduled a one day Memphis visit to boost the nonviolent protest for striking sanitation workers. Rev Ralph Abernathy said Mrs King would lead a street march in Memphis if plans hold. Dr King was killed in Memphis last Thursday.
