Officials note brief sessions and a possible shift as Communist delegates hint at concessions while Allies press for prisoner exchanges and a ban on airfield construction.
The Supreme Court upheld key sections of the 1950 McCarran internal security act requiring timely papers for deportation and allowed New York stockholders in a World War II enemy firm organized under neutral Swiss law to sue to recover investments totaling over 100 million dollars. It also ruled a Swiss firm could not recover about four million dollars in stocks seized, but let a 97 percent owner pursue a lower court settlement. Fritz von Opel, linked to the Opel family, is noted among the stock owners. The decision also affirmed the death sentence of a 71-year-old grandfather.
Fort Hood Texas April 7 The 82nd Airborne division playing the enemy in the Long Horn maneuvers retreated after U S forces launched an attack. The exercise, largest in U S history, ends Thursday at noon with expectations of reaching the Colorado River 75 miles from Monday. First Armored tanks bolster the advance and a rattlesnake tactic unsettles the area. The ninth casualty was Pfc Garland W Beach killed when a jeep overturned in the maneuver zone.
J Howard McGrath finished his term as attorney general by summoning 2000 Justice Department workers and offering blessings to the department and the President of the United States. The brief farewell underscores his exit from the role and marks a transition in the federal justice leadership.
President Truman urged Congress to extend emergency wartime powers before the Japanese peace treaty takes effect. A C54 military transport plummeted into Elkhorn Mountain five miles southeast of Jefferson City at 10:25 a m on a fog shrouded flight from Great Falls to Oakland California. Butte residents reported an unusually large muskrat wandering West Aluminum street Monday morning, mistaken for a beaver by deputy game warden Les Barton. Barton moved the animal to a safer area, speculating high waters pushed it into town.

Railroads face court action by three unions over a struck shutdown, while oil workers join a separate wage dispute involving 73 oil companies and 200,000 CIO AFL and independents.
