Analysts note Hughes estate could face 77 percent tax unless gifted to science as lawyer suggested. FBI fingerprints for identification were obtained. burial plans for the billionaire at Glenwood Cemetery near Houston were announced with services kept private.
Houston Chronicle reports in the early 1970s Hughes Tool Co directors said most of the Howard Hughes estate would go to a medical foundation and the Mormon Church. Dietrich, an ex Hughes executive, recalled Hughes saying Mormons did not smoke and were less likely to discuss his affairs with reporters.
Belgrade resident Raymond Frank Krushensky, 41, died about 3:55 a.m. Tuesday when an eastbound freight train collided with his vehicle five miles west of Belgrade. Officials said the truck became stuck diagonally on BN property and the train did not stop until about 300 feet past the impact. An autopsy was expected to be performed.
Helena AP Neil J. Lynch long time Montana Senate majority leader and candidate for chief justice faced scrutiny over his credentials after earning a law degree following a career begun at Montana State University in mechanical engineering.
Butte voters chose two new members for the school board in a Tuesday election with 20 percent turnout. Leader Robert Fischer, 38, 2647 Placer, a Montana Highway division utility agent, won with 2 814 votes. Ralph LaFleur, 38, 2042 Wall, defeated incumbent Bob Vivian by 477 votes, 2 588 to 2 111. LaFleur is a buyer for Hennessy’s.
Anaconda re elected incumbents to the board of trustees with three seats filled by six newcomers. Emmett B. O Leary led with 873 votes followed by Claudia J. East. Jack E. Swanson and Merley 204 and William A. Brolin 57,358 among totals. Willow Creek elected Ira Crowe to a three year term, defeating Darrell Rassety 59 to 48. Levy requests failed and board canvass will occur soon with reorganization over the weekend.
AP reports Morris Udall led Wisconsin's presidential primary while Henry M. Jackson held New York's delegate race to stay ahead of rivals without a majority. Ford swept Wisconsin Republicans with 56 percent as Reagan shifts to the Southwest and South. Ford tops GOP with 55 percent to Reagan 44 percent with 4% of precincts counted.
In Philipsburg the school election approved moving 4 000 dollars from an inactive dormitory fund to the building fund by 84 to 5. The money finances a dust filtration system at the high school shop. Voters also re elected William Wight and Thomas Collins to three year trustee terms and elected Vern Engle to a one year term filling Grady Ross’s vacancy. All candidates ran unopposed.
A commerce Researchers Association index shows wide price variation across cities from Cedar Falls to San Jose for items like house calls and bourbon. It uses Des Moines as a reference point and lists rents mortgages and health costs in multiple states, with New York and Aspen among high and low extremes.
Atty General William Hyland will not appeal the Quinlan case. The Quinlan family, hospital, and doctors plan to proceed without an appeal and may soon end life support for 22 year old Karen Quinlan who has been comatose since April 1975.
In Bozeman the largest turnout in the city’s school elections history occurred as the elementary levy of 911,124 passed 1,704 to 1,283 while the high school levy 735,278 and reserve fund issues failed. Bozeman residents approved the 1,987 to 1,615 levy there, but track and tennis court projects failed. Manhattan and Belgrade results are noted with several incumbents reelected.
Dillon residents approved elementary and high school levies and reelected two incumbent trustees. Beaverhead County High School trustee Carole Love won a second term over Dan McGinley 396 to 137. Elementary trustee Eileen Stephens ran unopposed and earned 511 votes. The elementary levy of 120,978 dollars passed 400 to 140 and the high school levy of 148,701.52 dollars passed 397 to 147.
