Butte School District trustees win in election

John W. Whelan Independent Party and Allen R. McKenzie United Party were elected district trustees. Voters approved special mill levies for high and elementary schools, a $1,196,790 bond for a new elementary school, site acquisition, and land for a Vocational Technical School. Whelan led with 5,642 votes. McKenzie had 4,904. Helen Kneebone and Paul M. Keith trailed. Board composition shifts minorly. United Party holds five seats to Independent’s two. Board will reconvene to canvass and reorganize.

Bech Becomes First in Anaconda Area Spelling Bee

Nearly 300 parents and teachers packed the Anaconda High School Little Theater for the Butte area spelling bee. Pete Beck, an eighth grader from Deer Lodge Junior High, finished first among 60 contestants from six counties after a long elimination round.

Johnson delays speech to Congress due to King funeral

The White House says President Johnson will not address a joint session on Monday night and has postponed the appearance with no new date set. Press secretary George Christian cited Martin Luther King Jr funeral in Atlanta on Tuesday as the reason and said Johnson consulted with Capitol Hill leaders before postponing his address. Johnson had hoped to offer constructive actions for the nation in this hour of need.

Downtown explosion kills 16 in Richmond Indiana

A large blast at the Marting Arms Co sporting goods store on Main Street toppled three buildings and damaged five others. Authorities feared up to 50 more may be buried as the National Guard listed 58 missing. more than 100 injured. FBI and state police investigated gunpowder and possible gas leak factors. An emergency morgue was set up at the National Guard armory as residents searched for relatives.

Reward Offered In Butte Double Slaying Case

Relatives of Eva Marjorie McQuiston and Nancy McQuiston offer 500 dollars for information leading to solving their double murder in 1965 at their McGlone Heights home. The McQuistons were found April 14 with the car nearby in a gully. Authorities say the case remains active.

Soldier from Logan dies of shrapnel in Vietnam

LOGAN AP Army Spec. Jimmy D. Pickle, 23, died April 4 from shrapnel wounds suffered in action March 9 in Vietnam, Defense Department said. He served 342 years in Germany before being sent to Vietnam a year ago. Survived by parents Franklin and Mrs. Pickle, two brothers Willis and Gilbert, and sister Mrs. Ann Taylor of Longdale California. Funeral arrangements not announced.

LeRoy regrets error on McKeon fight over bill

State Sen. LeRoy Anderson says his Friday Great Falls speech misstated Luke McKeon’s motives. He now says McKeon opposed the water conservancy district bill at the urging of soil conservation district members in three counties of his district and acted for constituents.

Forsyth Fatal Crash Raises Toll to Forty

A one car wreck half a mile west of Forsyth Saturday evening killed Billings man Richard C. Bears 36. His wife Jerry and one of his three children were slightly injured. Coroner W E Bears said the car failed to negotiate a curve and overturned on old Highway 10 near Interstate 94. Bears death is the 40th in 1968, matching last year’s toll on this date.

GOP Women Hear National Officer in Butte Conference

Mrs. John Salmon of Tucson spoke at the District 8 Republican Women's spring conference in the Finlen Hotel Butte with Gov. Tim Babcock among attendees. She urged better government and personal political involvement this election year. Isabel Moberly described mounting domestic and foreign challenges as problems that have piled up.
