Y M C A drive nears $21,000 goal with luncheon planned

The Y M C A campaign surpassed the halfway mark with more than $11,000 in new money renewals and pledges. A report luncheon is set for tomorrow at the Y M C A where chief agent Dr H H James will receive updates from 21 general leaders and renewals are urged to map final plans before Thursday’s drive close. E G Craine leads this section but others have challenged him as activity grows. The drive began April 1 and will end with a banquet Thursday evening.

Election tightens school board as Renouard and Hosty win

In a close vote for School District No. 1 trustees, Dr. C. S. Renouard and Thomas S. Hosty, both aligned with their parties, won three year terms. They defeated Richard J. Stodden and Tom Brown as 14,314 ballots were cast from 23,193 eligible voters.

Carl Smith city electrician of Butte recalls the brutal opening days of World War I as the United States entered the war twenty three years ago. He survived major battles with the Second Division and later hospital care. Smith, living at 324 West Gagnon, is now recovering from an operation performed March 26 at St James hospital.

General drive against Reds and German American Bund ordered

Washington April 6. Chairman Dies announced the House committee on un American activities ordered 90 subpoenas in a general drive against the Communist party and the German American Bund. Fifty subpoenas target Communists including William Foster and Earl Browder. forty for bondsmen overseeing the Bund since Fritz Kuhn’s imprisonment. The aim is to obtain all records. list of subpoenaed individuals or residence cities not released. Subpoenaed Communists are scattered nationwide, with most Bund members in eastern or Pacific coast states.
