The Anaconda Company payroll in March 1934 stood at 786000 dollars, rising to 2306349 dollars by March 1937 as 154069 shifts in 1934 grew to 356005 in 1937. By 1937 many workers were full time at high wages, signaling a revival in Butte’s copper region despite a recent copper price drop from 17 to 16 cents per pound.

Dr. Hjalmar Schacht, president of the reichsbank and Germany's economic minister, prepared to travel to Brussels to present Germany's economic woes to Belgian leaders and gauge support for easing international trade barriers. Belgian Prime Minister Paul Van Zeeland, pressed by France and Britain, is reviewing trade barriers, amid speculation about Davis and world peace via trade.
In Washington April 6 the Senate judiciary committee faced reaction as Senator Hughes proposed delaying public hearings on the Roosevelt court bill. Chairman Ashurst resisted any move to end the hearings while Senator Burke urged continued testimony, noting many witnesses remain to speak as historian James Truskaw Adams questioned constitutionality.
Gov. Frank Murphy announced an agreement ending the Chrysler strike. The United Automobile Workers will be recognized as the sole bargaining agent for Chrysler employees, with a contract through March 31, 1938. The union will halt sit‑down strikes and avoid plant activity during the term, and Chrysler will reopen plants and rehire striking workers as quickly as possible. Negotiations begin April 8 in Detroit for a supplementary agreement.
Two navy planes taking part in fleet sea exercises crashed midair and fell into the sea today. All four aboard died: Lieut. Ludwell R. Pickett of Coronado California. Russian tanks appear on the Loyalist front as rebel sympathizers fear for 1,000 prisoners aboard two hostage ships on the Nervian river between Bilbao and Portugalete.
Three Montana counties Flathead Blaine and Powell filed with the Secretary of State petitions seeking local option elections to vote out saloons. Petition signatures meet 35 percent of voters in each county under the Joffray liquor law. The counties lead a statewide move with elections set for the next regular county vote. About 200 licensed saloons operate under the new law which took effect yesterday.
The Clara arriving from Chile on April 6 altered course five times to avoid whales. Captain A. A. Anderson said the whales wouldn’t get out of the liner’s way, causing the detour.
The Roundup club aims to raise four fifths of the 1937 Y M C A Covered Wagon Expedition goal. Members will drive a city wide campaign to support the Northwest community center and its educational programs. The club has raised about $400,000 over 16 years for the Y.
Senate leaders draft a resolution denouncing sit-down strikes and illegal labor practices by employers. Senator Borah opposes condemning labor without condemning capital. Roosevelt declines to comment. A bi partisan bloc of 100 proposes work relief.
Twenty years after the United States entered World War I, Gold Star mothers, ex-service women and Gold Star sisters from Silver Bow unit No. 1 American Legion auxiliary gathered for a luncheon at Mrs. Robert L. Pott’s Ramsay home. Attendees included Mrs. Fred Oates and others with festive Red Cross era decor and tribute to fallen soldiers.
Anaconda April 6 Special Edmond Butch Fahey was found not guilty by a district court jury of manslaughter. The verdict stemmed from a September 18 traffic crash in which pedestrian Mrs. Tena Trunk was fatally injured.
Storm and flood damage spread from Texas to Florida with 12 lives lost and millions in losses. A tornado leveled two Oakland Park homes near Fort Lauderdale and damaged an apartment. A seven hour cloudburst ruined about 3 million dollars of winter vegetables near Lake Okeechobee and prompted appeals to federal aid and Red Cross. Alabama rivers swelled overnight and rains of four to 10 inches left six dead, 29 injured and 500 homeless.
In Montpelier Vermont lawmakers approved a measure banning sit-down strikes making the state the first to enact such a prohibition. The move targets labor protests by preventing workers from occupying factories to force negotiations.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh departed Zagreb yesterday in a private monoplane at 1130 hours and have not reported a destination. Officials and the Italian air ministry say they have no information on the flight, with Paris or London suspected as possible non stop targets.
Charles Ruddell, an ARRC critic, was reinstated in the Matanuska colony with a reduced debt claim. ARRC faced withdrawals as Harold Davis resigned and others planned to quit. Ruddell had been expelled January 27 after accusing exorbitant charges and contesting a $12,000 bill.
