Widely Wanted Fugitive and Partner Killed by Officers
Fred Walter Lennon a 39 year old fugitive and associate of Lee Emory Downs a 44 year old Butte native and one of the nations ten most wanted criminals was shot and killed near Mojave California by an FBI agent and a California highway patrolman. Lennon resisted arrest on a federal warrant charging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for armed robbery. Downs was wanted for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for burglary and is being questioned in several major crimes. Lennon faced charges from San Francisco for armed robbery at Manning's Coffee Shop on December 13 1948 and from California for an armed robbery at Langendorf Baking on October 4 1948. The Navy flying boat Marshall Mars crash landed near Oahu on April 5 and exploded, burning to the waterline. Seven crewmen escaped in lifeboats and were rescued by surface vessels and helicopters.
