Butte Pioneers club hosted a large Washington birthday celebration at the American Legion hall. A cast of 118 delivered a lengthy but brisk program featuring a Washington Junior high minuet, a playlet Indian Camp and Washington, Indian songs, club swinging, and tableaux such as Washington Family Group Betsy Ross Flag and Minute Men.
Salt Lake City chamber of commerce board adopts a neutral stance on copper tariff, noting there are two sides to the question and no unanimity among copper producers. The policy says the matter is uncertain and has complex effects on the industry and the community. Continued on page 2.
In Erie on April 5 a priest, the Rev. Lawrence Trembley, gave last rites to a maimed woman in an ambulance and she died minutes later. Returning to the orphanage where his mother recently visited, he learned she had died earlier and, in a morgue, cried out “Mother” on recognizing the deceased.
A large wall painting from the Point of Rocks stage station on the Dillon-Twin Bridges road vanished. The now abandoned building drew visitors. the item linked early Vigilante days to modern times. Mrs. J. W. Scott urged its return with assurances no questions would be asked.
In Judge J J Lynch s courtroom 83 Butte Boy Scouts and leaders were honored with rank and merit badge raises. Eagle Scouts Roland Jobe and Edwin Leipheimer received the gold and silver palms. A list of 145 merit badge counselors was announced including 52 new counselors. Five scouts reached star rank six to first class and 23 to second class the largest rise in months. The court was well attended with many parents present.
In Helsinki on April 5, Finland adopted prohibition repeal in a calm, businesslike transition. Liquor monopoly shops opened at 10 am amid falling snow and icy streets, with hundreds queued outside. The first purchaser was an elderly woman who waited since 5 am.
Germany reports the death of Vera, a fragile incubator baby weighing under 1.2 pounds at birth and 12 inches long. After more than two weeks of care in an incubator in Berlin, the infant did not survive. Authorities note the rare case drew international attention as the so called wonder baby.
A blue eyed curly haired daughter was born tonight to Gloria Swanson American motion picture star and wife of Michael Farmer in London. The infant weighed seven pounds two ounces and cried loudly when shown to her mother prompting the quip She seems to be wired for sound. Michael Farmer paraded about with the baby until stopped by the nurse.
Tokyo April 5. A government spokesman said Japan would willingly sign a treaty with the United States guaranteeing perpetual independence for the Philippine Islands if they are freed. The comment followed Washington's Hare bill advancing toward possible full independence by 1940, drawing surprise and extensive coverage in official circles.
Charles A. Lindbergh stays at his Sourland Hills estate in Hopewell N J and assists in beating back brush fires that neared his house. An air of hope surrounds the case as authorities and family offer no explanation for the optimism over the kidnapped 21 month old. A recent two day trip suggests a possible rendezvous near Martha's Vineyard with ransom and baby to be exchanged at sea amid ongoing dual investigations.
Washington April 5 The Democratic House majority voted to oust Republican Peter C. Granata of Illinois and seat Democrat Stanley H. Kunz in the Eighth Illinois district. The vote was party line with one defection as five Democrats broke from their leaders.
After a day of the Red Triangle derby, Roundup club entries push toward the purse. Flight, ridden by Henry Hirsh, is the favorite amid track gossip. Auditors examining Kreuger and Toll accounts after Swedish industrialist Ivar Kreuger’s death in Paris say the December 31, 1930 balance sheet grossly misrepresented the firm’s financial position. Some assets did not exist, others were greatly exaggerated. Continued on page 2.

A mob of about 10 000 stormed Newfoundland's house of assembly in St John s April 5 smashing windows and scattering government documents as Prime Minister Sir Richard Squires, sheltered by police, faced threats of being tossed into the harbor. Three ministers helped end the siege and the government resigned setting a constitutional crisis in motion.
The Silver Bowl No 1 of Americas Legion schedules a meeting tonight to mark the fifteenth anniversary of U S entry into World War I proclaimed by President Wilson on April 6 1917. McGinnis will preside as committees form Memorial Day plans and Legionnaires join other veterans groups to honor the war dead.
