Police report indicate Martin Luther King was shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis as he spoke with friends prior to a rally for striking sanitation workers. King died at St. Joseph Hospital after emergency surgery. A curfew was imposed as investigators pursued a possible white suspect seen near a flop house.
The Butte-Silver Bow Anti Poverty Council is named prime sponsor for a Concentrated Employment Program for six counties Silver Bow Deer Lodge Jefferson Lewis and Clark Broadwater Meagher funded by the Department of Labor and the Office of Economic Opportunity. Planning runs to June 1 with a possible July 1 start as staff hires and offices are set from Butte to Helena Anaconda Broadwater Jefferson Meagher.
Gerald E. Hudson a 43 year old Billings construction worker and ex farmer filed for the Democratic nomination to Montana's 2nd Congressional District seat. He campaigns on a 12 point platform built over 25 years saying he sought action from Congress for two decades. Battin is the incumbent Republican seeking a fifth term. Hudson was born June 8 1924 in Miles City and served in the Air Force during World War II. He farmed near Billings before returning to construction work in 1966.
John L. Peterson was elected chairman with Duncan R. Campbell Jr. as vice chairman of the Butte Model Cities Demonstration Agency. The 15 member group called for applications for executive director and coordinator, due by 5 p.m. April 19, with forms at Petersons office.
A two car head-on collision two miles west of Stanford on U S 87 killed Benjamin F. Severns of Billings and Elizabeth Peterson, 64, of Lethbridge. Severns was alone in his car and Peterson died in a Great Falls hospital. Her husband Frank, 69, remains hospitalized with internal injuries. The toll rises to 39 for the state highway total.
James H. Denend, 21, Missoula, was found guilty on six counts of manslaughter for a two car crash last Nov 4 ten miles northwest of Missoula on U S 93. Dist. Judge E Gardner Brownlee presided over a seven man five woman jury. Sentencing set for April 11. The crash killed six members of the Robert McCrea family of Dixon. Patrol testimony said Denend’s car traveled over 90 mph.
Attorney General Ramsey Clark ordered an immediate federal inquiry into the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis to determine if any federal law was violated. The probe could invoke civil rights conspiracy provisions.
President Johnson says the nation is saddened by the slaying of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and calls on citizens to reject violence. He postpones his war peace mission for one day in a brief national address on television and radio.
President Johnson said he will stay out of the 1968 presidential fight, avoiding any attempt to pick a successor as a lame duck leader. He called the stance an effort to keep the Democratic Party united and preserve his dignity and effectiveness.
Montana six unit University System plans a 1968-69 budget of 33.3 million, up about 3.996 million from 1967-68. The proposal to the Board of Regents includes state funds, student fees, federal income and other income with detailed unit allocations for MSU Bozeman, UM Missoula, Eastern MT College, Northern MT College, Montana Tech, Western MT College, plus the State Experiment Station and smaller items.
Marine Cpl. Michael L. Doane, son of Mr and Mrs Oscar L Doane of Browning Montana, was killed in action in Vietnam, the Defense Department reported Thursday.
NEW YORK The Anaconda Co said work resumed at Chuquicamata in Chile after ratification Wednesday of a new fifteen month labor contract by the employees. The Chuquicamata mine, run by Chile Exploration Co a subsidiary of Anaconda, typically yields more than 300000 tons of copper annually. The contract had expired March 31.
Warren A. McMillan 53 a Manhattan bar owner filed for the Republican nomination for Montana governor. A pro gambling candidate he argues legalized taxed gambling could boost tourism and help with sales tax. McMillan plans statewide campaigning and notes past support for gambling advocate Charles Lee. He was born in Terry and operates the Broken Arrow Bar in Gallatin County.
