Late count holds school levies in doubt
A 1.8 million special levy for School District 1 trails as 21 precincts report. The 1.3 million elementary levy leads 1,256 to 1,239, while the 0.5 million high school levy trails 1,417 to 1,185. In the eight-seat race for three trustees, Betty Thomett leads with 1,859 votes as 24 precincts report. About 9,666 ballots cast out of 20,400 registered. The McKinley School addition funded by Anaconda Co. money passes 1,860 to 1,141. A south side school site purchase funded by Anaconda Co. funds trails 1,485 to 1,140. Several large precincts had not yet reported.

Carpet layer nabbed with two Picassos
New York AP two Picasso lithographs and a Miro, stolen in 1970 and valued at about 25000, were found in the Brooklyn home of Arnold Jarrett, 26, a carpet layer. Detectives seized them during a bail-jumping arrest warrant and he faces an added charge of criminal possession of stolen property. The works were authenticated as from the Weintraub Galleries.

Deadly gas barge jammed near McAlpine Dam in Louisville
More than 4,000 residents fled Louisville along the Ohio River as salvage engineers tried to stabilize a derelict barge loaded with 640 tons of liquid chlorine. A twin-hulled salvage catamaran would straddle the barge and cables would be wrapped around it. Nightfall halted progress with the barge not yet secured. crews planned to resume through the night, moving the catamaran about 30 feet more to complete sling connections.
