A United Press dispatch notes Allied hopes to pressure Nazi Germany by exploiting a potential gap in its defenses. It argues Hitler seeks stalemate, while Britain and France fear costly frontal engagement unless they can strike now before further German buildup.
Washington April 1 congress backed a House approved civil functions appropriation by 44 150 000 with 30 000 000 for flood control and 14 150 000 to start the third set of giant locks at the Panama Canal. Representative Cochran urged a 38 000 000 supplemental relief fund as WPA rolls hover around 2 100 000 for April.
In Mononga, West Virginia on April 1, John L. Lewis warned that if the Democratic Party does not nominate a candidate or adopt a labor friendly platform he will convene a convention of liberal, agricultural, and other organizations to craft a program for all Americans. He did not directly commit to forming a third party but signaled broad alliance building.
About 400 men and women attended the opening dinner of the annual Y M C A financial campaign in Butte to back a community program focused on character building for local youth. Dr Bruce R Baxter president of Willamette University Salem Ore delivered the keynote speech on responsibility and prevention of evil as a citywide effort.
Wisconsin voters face a spring election to pick 24 Democratic and 24 Republican delegates to national conventions. The decision tests Roosevelt third term sentiment and weighs Republican hopefuls Dewey and Vandenberg. Roosevelt Garner factions vie for four at large and four district seats. Garner backers predict a clean sweep of Roosevelt delegates.
Butte and Silver Bow county census enumerators will take the field this morning along with 120 000 nationwide. Forty two persons will enumerate every man woman and child with 34 questions each. Earl C Simmons supervisor for 23 counties said 335 enumerators will be employed in the district. The job should finish in one month.
Senator Burton Wheeler of Montana said he would accept the Democratic presidential nomination if the party felt he could win but would reject a vice presidential slot He spoke at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco urging businessmen to strengthen democracy and curb bureaucracy He said he would not lead a pro labor third party and declined to join a Lewis led ticket, noting pressure from back home business leaders.
Senator Pat McCarran charges the State Department with considering changes to excise taxes on imported oil copper coal and lumber under the reciprocal trade program He urges an amendment to forbid such changes while Senator Clark questions the claim McCarran cites potential copper industry harm and warned of a lumber levy threat
Judge James H. Baldwin reappoints L M Van Etten a Butte attorney and United States commissioner for a four year term. Van Etten has served seven terms and begins his eighth term. The commissioners office is located in the Owsley building.
Rains across western Montana on April Fools Day boost hay and grain yields, with Butte seeing light snow that melted on pavement. Measured rainfall included 0.16 inch in 24 hours, while Missoula Helena Havre reported 0.30 inch at 5:30 am. Kalispell recorded 0.93 inch and Helena 0.01 inch in the 12 hour period ending yesterday afternoon. Snow flurries expected today and a partly cloudy outlook for Wednesday.
Helena voters elected John J. Haytin businessman since 1908 mayor with 2962 votes to 1965 for incumbent Albert J. Roberts who sought a third term. Roberts had 25 years as Helena high school principal before entering politics. In Missoula, Harry M. Smith retained city council seat with 205 vote margin over Paul D. Wilcox as 4055 votes were cast.
Forecast for Montana calls for snow flurries on Tuesday and partly cloudy skies on Wednesday with little change in temperatures.
Sixty seven grandmothers and great grandmothers from several states toured Washington and Annapolis during the National Grandmothers club four day sightseeing spree. They visited printing presses, the national museum, the Washington Monument and Annapolis, ending with tea at the White House tomorrow. The club will present Mrs Roosevelt with a membership and a club pin as the first grandma of the land.
Spring floods across eastern Pennsylvania and southeastern New York forced about 12,000 people to flee in the Wilkes-Barre and Susquehanna areas as rivers rose toward record crests. Gov. James toured damage while National Guard and WPA workers aided relief efforts. In New York, emergency actions affected Binghamton and Johnson City as cold weather slowed rising waters.
Eighty eight people were granted United States citizenship during an all day hearing before District Judge J J Lynch, raising spring naturalizations in federal and district courts to 92. E R Bonsall oversaw the proceedings as examiner. list includes Ivan Polich Norman Carver Emile Bouchard Hugh Evans Joan Ergel Gottfried Kagi and others.
Jean Lehn a 16 year old Christian Brothers high school student and Troop 15 member will be presented with the Eagle Scout badge at the April court of honor in Judge J J Lynch's courtroom at 8 pm Rabbi Joseph Gitin officiating Sixty Boy Scout members from the Butte district are to appear for the ceremony and award this evening.
In Washington on April 1 the House and Senate pressed for inquiries into unneutral statements in the German government’s white book. Rep Fish urged a special committee to probe possible impeachment of American diplomats or the President if warranted. Sen Reynolds called for Senate foreign relations committee action and charged Bullitt and Kennedy with war-mongering imputed by the German notes. Reynolds also proposed a resolution to disclaim interference in foreign disputes.
The general public attends a 10:30 AM pontifical Mass at Immaculate Conception church as Monsignor J. C. Willging is invested as domestic prelate by Pope Pius XII. Bishop Gilmore presides with Rev. Tougas and a large clergy turnout. A parish dinner follows and a 8 PM reception is planned with Senator Gallwey chairing.
