Missoula March 31 Ranchmen have killed scores of mountain lions in the upper Thompson river country northwest of here since the start of the year. Ranchers, alarmed by the rising numbers, began a campaign last winter. Sales Brothers led with 27, others followed, as the lions were reportedly reducing regional deer herds.
The Butte Lions Club approves a plan for a unified council to include officers from Rotary Kiwanis Exchange Lions Chamber of Commerce Business and Professional Women's club and Rotana. A meeting of club officers from these groups is set for next week to coordinate civic and community plans and avoid conflicts. C W Webb Lions international representative spoke at the meeting noting the organization’s progress since its founding.
Voters in school district No. 1 go to the polls today to elect three trustees for three year terms. Polls open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with lunch break 12 to 1. About 23,000 registered at 32 polling places. results expected by 10 p.m. Candidates: Peoples ticket O B Ashford Fred Root Fred Taylor and Independents J F McNally Barry O Leary Harry Meyer.
Bozeman moves to ban standing drinking as beer returns. An emergency ordinance requires patrons to be seated in all beer establishments to curb rowdy saloonlike behavior. The city commission aims to keep venues orderly and avoid past barroom imagery.
Washington March 31 Senate leaders after a Roosevelt conference predicted early passage of a wide farm relief program. The plan would aid mortgage payments and lift crop prices while the administration’s reforestation bill will put 250000 men to work in forests by mid summer. The agriculture committee plans to resume talks, aiming to report a bill to the Senate by Monday, with mortgage financing added as an amendment to the price lifting measure. Senator Robinson said sentiment favored keeping house items. cattle and sheep removal from the basic commodities list was discussed.
A state warrant totaling 60 179 33 was received by the county treasurer Mervin Dempsey and is mainly for the counties schools. Most funds come from state lands and will be apportioned to district No 1 schools in the city and suburbs early next week by Maybelle Hogan county superintendent of schools.

A March tornado outbreak roared through east Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and beyond, killing at least 68 people and injuring many as towns like Greenville Laurel Tupelo and Baton Rouge suffered destruction. Winds gusted across the region and flood threats emerged. Mississippi towns including Laurel and Tupelo reported multiple fatalities.
