D Carl Griffin recalls 116 Union County men leaving for Camp Jackson. Exemptions were granted to Roy Blatr Walter Lindsey Hayne Johnson Eustace Collins Grady Nash Frank Fairley Frank Nassiff and John Fred Stegall. Some received permanent exemptions for physical reasons while others are delayed to year end. The group traveled to Columbia with mixed spirits singing Home Sweet Home and Nearer My God to Thee as they departed.

State Premature Verdict in Murder Case at Concord
The state wrapped up its preliminary hearing against Gaston B. Means for the murder of Mrs. Maude A. King. Two experts testified it would be physically impossible for Mrs. King to have shot herself as described. Means, the widow’s business agent, was present at target practice at Blackwelder Springs when the fatal shot occurred and told a coroner jury she shot herself accidentally.

Mob Driven to Raleigh After Prison Transfer
Rafe Cagle, twenty six, was arrested near Linden on an alleged attempted crime against Adelaide Jeffreys. Authorities moved him by car to Raleigh as a mob gathered, firing at the vehicle but causing no injuries. Two brothers of Cagle were released after innocence was proven. Cagle prayed during the transport.
