Chesterfield May Get Artillery Target Range

One Killed In Smash In Charlotte Bridge Crash

Concord man George M. Love died when a car driven by Lieutenant Gowan Dusenbery Jr crashed into the Seaboard Air Line underpass on North Tryon Street. Dusenbery testified he was traveling 30 to 26 mph after glare from an oncoming car blinded him. He blamed the crash on the bright headlight and skid during braking. Police noted drinking prior to the accident. Dusenbery denied heavy intoxication. He was fined 25 dollars for speeding.

British War Cabinet official arrives at Atlantic port

Rt Hon Viscount Reading lord chief justice of England landed by American steamship with Lady Reading. He said he is on a special mission for the British war cabinet regarding finances. Valley woman found guilty in fatal abuse case of neighbor child

In St. Joseph Vermont on September 12 Mrs. Alvin Kennington was found guilty of serious case in the second degree for taking part in the July 5 death of Alice Bradshaw a 3 year old neighbor. confessing with Miss Etta Hicks and farm hand John Kerwin testified Kennington choked the child while Hicks struck with a club and Kerwin aided by moving the body to a swampy field.

In Rock Hill on September 12 Judge Johnson sentenced Fletcher Griffith a Woodruff man who refused to register under the conscription act. Found guilty he received one year in prison at Atlanta and must register in open court. He whispered only Praise the Lord.

Draft and Exemption Roundup in Mecklenburg County

The county lifts 116 white men next week for the first national army draft with another 40 percent to follow October 5 likely including many Negroes. A long list of named draftees from Monroe, Waxhaw, Marshville, Matthews, Unionville and surrounding towns appears, with discharge and exemption actions described and temporary rules set by the local board.
