British field observers recount renewed German attempts to breach British lines near Ypres with gas and infantry. The fighting spans Monday through Wednesday, with heavy bombardment, gas clouds, counterattacks, and stubborn defense by Allied troops, as Germans suffer exhaustion and losses.
Secretary Daniels responded to sharp criticism from the National Security League and others by praising the Navy's strength while urging continued improvement. He argued the fleet is strong and well manned but not yet at peak power, and pledged ongoing support from the Administration and Congress to advance naval efficiency and readiness. He cited recent naval provisions, aircraft orders, submarine progress, and expanded mine and auxiliary programs as evidence of forward momentum. The remarks were delivered during a Atlantic fleet dinner in New York City, with Admiral Fletcher present.
The steamship St Paul arrived today from Liverpool New York with 217 cabin and 106 steerage passengers. Captain Passow reported sighting the Lusitania disaster scene May 9 and more than a dozen bodies. The ship carried the body of Captain Alfred Gunter of the Gulflight. Yale Flag at Half Mast in memory of Yale graduates killed in the Lusitania sinking.
Following the sinking of the Reginear John Welsh, Mia Gerta Neilson a milliner from NH was married in Manchester En after reaching there. Welsh had felled the young woman as the Lot tania went down.
