Two Skylarking Nove Dive to Death in Biplane

Mineola Long Island May morning fatal crash after two enlisted Signal Corps men Merritt and Spilena allegedly seized a government L W F biplane and flew for about half an hour reaching 3000 feet. The machine then plunged from 1500 feet and burst on impact, killing both youths instantly and wrecking the aircraft valued at $12000. The incident prompted a Washington inquiry into whether the men acted with or without authority and how such access to planes was permitted at the aviation field.
