Rockingham Sunk by German Submarine Near Liverpool
The American steamer Rockingham was sunk by a German submarine off the coast, with 49 men aboard including many Americans. Two boats were saved, one by a patrol vessel, while 13 men remain missing. The ship carried a crew of 36 and a naval contingent of a lieutenant and 12 men, and its cargo and vessel were valued at $3,250,000. The Rockingham was due in Liverpool that day. Paris May 1 Rene Seitz a nineteen year old French aviator who lives in Senlis crossed the French frontier from Switzerland after escaping from a German prison camp at Lechfeld Bavaria He had been there since June 22 1916 when he took part in the reprisal raid on Karlsruhe His airplane was riddled with bullets and his engine damaged Sergt Marcel Maurin of the Blue Devils and a Russian infantryman accompanied Seitz in the escape The trio say German hatred of the United States has grown since the war began and many lower classes think the Allies must win now.

French Mission Starts on Tour Across United States

Hundreds Accepted for OTC Camp at Fort Oglethorpe
More than seven hundred men were accepted tonight for admission to the Reserve Officers Training Camp at Fort Oglethorpe Georgia and will be notified next week when to report.
