First Union county commencement a grand success

The Journal notes Union county held its first commencement last Saturday with about two thousand people in attendance. Fourteen hundred children marched in the parade led by Superintendent Nisbet and other officials, while over five hundred watched. Diplomas were awarded to seventh grade graduates from numerous townships, and a Joyner education speech crowned the event. Local courts reported several cases, and Mrs. Eunice Fowler, mother of Monroe residents, died at 62 after a long illness.

Near Death as Storm Sparks Fierce Wire Shock Tragedy

In Gay Creek township, Moors 6 Raycom and Wilson Mullis were struck by a live line when a sapling toppled Telegraph wires during a mill storm. Baucom suffered severe electric shock trapping him aboard a log wagon as the wires sparked and burned his hands and abdomen. He regained control only late that night, while Mullis endured a grave ordeal as the team fought to free him. The event caused power cuts and furnace-like mud near the crash site, with the county’s Klek buick in Monroe emitting dangerous flames from arresters.
