Shot From Ambush In Waxhaw Injures Plowman
Waxhaw observer reports Will Clyburn, a Black man, was shot while plowing on Saturday morning by a youth named Ed Fletcher. Clyburn was turning at row end when a shotgun blast struck his back and the second load went astray. Fletcher fled after the shot, and the injured man identified him.

Children’s Day Exercises at Bethel Church
The Journal reports Bethel church near Stout held a large Children’s Day program last Sunday. Southern railway plans to double track its 1649 mile line from Washington to Atlanta within five years. President Harrison secures financing via $20,000,000 Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line bonds. $5.5 million already sold to refund Southern bonds. Dead in hotel fire Greensboro traveling salesman suffocated
H F Collum a Philadelphia based traveling salesman for Landers Frerey and Clarke died in a Guilford Hotel fire in Greensboro. He planned to be home by July 4. Rescue attempts were made by staff and others as smoke filled the fourth floor. Collum was found unconscious near room 121 and pronounced dead at the scene.

West Virginia joins Georgia, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Tennessee as the ninth dry state. Archduke Francis Ferdinand Shot Dead in Sarajevo
Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his morganatic wife the Dutchess of Hohenburg were killed in Sarajevo by a student Gavrio Prinzip and conspirator Gabrielovics after a bomb attack failed. Prinzip, 18, and Gabrielovics, 21, fled but were seized by police as crowds surged. Mrs Stegall Dies Suddenly at 74 in North Monroe
Mrs Ollie M Stegall died suddenly last Friday at her son in law Robert Presley home in North Monroe where she had been helping nurse him ill. She was 74, daughter of Thomas Rose, twice married to Caldwell Tarlton and Griffin Stegall. One child from first marriage, Joel Tarlton, and ten from second, nine living. Body taken to Pleasant Grove church, funeral led by Rev J D Mills.
