May 31 tragedy in Greenville where a mother ordered a hen off its nest leading to the deaths of three children from a rattlesnake bite and drowning. The eight, nine, and one-year-old children died the same day. parents George and Mrs. Adams survive amid heartbreak.
The Elks banquet last Thursday in Monroe drew 100 plus members and friends from Charlotte and Concord. In the Fiks club rooms decorated with flags, Dunham Bundy presided and introduced C. M. Vann who welcomed guests. I A Webber of Charlotte gave the response, followed by impromptu speeches by several local members and guests. Music came from order members Herndon Hasty, WI Love, Robert Laney, George Lee, Keesler, Jin Wakter, and Gus Rinont. Attendees from Charlotte included A. Webber, WP Miller, B A Shepherd, Me Hay Moxa Bi, Noonan, W Whitman, Andrews, Gid AH Biison, Viking Joseph Finchey, Henry Durr, and Swope. A lodge was hoped for Monroe before midjow, with charter members noted, and population growth mentioned for Cait city.
Wilbur Wright, born April 16, 1867 in Dayton and co inventor of the bicycle makers turned aviation pioneers, died of typhoid fever contracted in the East during the first week of May at his Dayton home. The brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright forged the path to powered flight and shared in the trials and honors of their remarkable career.
The Stanly County Democratic party names R K Austin as its candidate for the Legislature praising his party work, zeal for county development, legal knowledge, and debating ability. The party predicts an overwhelming victory in November.

The seventh district Democratic convention met Tuesday in Asheboro to renominate Mr. Page. Delegations from all counties except Hoke Scotland and Upton attended. Union was represented by Mr. H. C. Blair. Delegates elected for the national convention in Baltimore were J. Blair Troy L. D. Robinson Warenboro D. E. B. Melver Sanford T. I. Batley Mocksville, each with half a vote. Melver and Robinson support Wilson, Blair and Batley support Underwood.
In Charlotte on Tuesday morning Robt Cureton a colored man shot his wife then fired at a white man who urged him to stop before turning the pistol on himself. Wounds to Cureton’s wife and the attacker were not fatal. Jealousy is named as the motive. Cureton said he read Job and felt beset by trouble before the fatal act.
A heated dispute surrounds the Republican National Convention with 204 contested delegations and a plan to allot 130 seats to Taft's personal friends, denying Roosevelt any allocation. Roosevelt vows opposition while the committee chair dismisses calls for fair distribution amidst party faction clashes.

John D Taylor died at his home three miles northeast of Monroe last Saturday morning at age 72. A cotten man by trade, he had lived at his late residence since the war and was a Confederate soldier known as an honest quiet man. Services were held at the grave with Elder Taylor officiating. burial was in Hill cemetery. He is survived by his wife and several children including Mrs Ola McGuirt and sons Thomas Calvin George William Hampton and Eustace. The community will miss him.

Three masked highwaymen rode into Cribberly Iowa May 31 driving residents from shops with revolvers. They looted every store and fled on horseback. A large posse hunts them. Two bandits reportedly wounded during escape. Separately General William Booth of the Salvation Army, recently operated on for cataract, is believed to be totally blind thereafter. In local obituary news, Mr J died May 28 after years in hospital and home. He was a Baptist, survived by wife four sons and three daughters, and remembered as a good citizen and devoted husband.
