United States Replies to Germany on Submarine War

The American minister in Berlin delivered President Wilson's note rejecting Germany's July 5 1915 reply and urging strict observance of neutral rights at sea. It asserts the high seas are free, condemns indiscriminate attacks on neutral vessels, and calls for a return to established rules of naval warfare.

Child Killed by Brother in Playful Gun Accident

Seven year old Curtis Barrett shot and killed his twelve year old brother Clyde while playing bear. Clyde showed Curtis how to shoot, and the younger boy unknowingly fired the loaded gun striking Clyde in the head. The brothers were locals on a plantation near Shelby. Clyde’s funeral was held at Zoar church. Nearby notes mention community reactions and unrelated local notices.

Punston May Shoot to Repel Border Firing

Washington dispatch says orders, with President Wilson, authorize Major General Punston to use force to stop any firing into American territory during border town tensions. Carranza commanders were told not to attack Villa forces near Nogales and to withdraw from Naco, leaving civil administration. General Punston instructed to resist border attacks immediately without further authorization.
