Notable Monroe Case Ends in Plea Deal in Assault
The case against J E Efird for assault with a deadly weapon on Prof. R W Allen concluded with Efird's attorneys agreeing to plead to assault and battery, pay a $250 fine plus costs, and compensate Prof. Allen $5,500. The compromise, urged by the school board and supported by Judge Pratt, followed extensive public interest and speeches by attorneys from Raleigh and local figures.
