Visit of Yankee Cavalry to Monroe, North Carolina
A force of about thirty five Yankee cavalry rode into Monroe in Union County on Wednesday afternoon. They seized a refugee wagon train of ten wagons from Chester District, took horses and mules and carried them away. Nineteen enslaved people were taken, thirteen escaped back that night. No buildings burned though casualties included two local couriers captured, Charley Brem and Marshell Jones.

Severe hailstorm devastates Yorke County crops and livestock
A night hailstorm battered Yorke County near Rock Hill, killing at least 16 cattle and wiping out crops. Farmland and orchards suffered extensive damage with deep hail accumulations, gullies filled to 8 to 14 feet, and fields of cotton and corn nearly unrecognizable. Local farms such as Brown McFadden, R. B. Fewell, and John T. Roddey reported grave losses.

Walking death of Col. Frank L. Denny in Washington
Col. Frank L. Denny retired of the U S Marine Corps fell from a balustrade in his Washington home and died of a cracked skull. The coroner ruled accidental death. Denny had been a central figure in a Marine Corps controversy and was moved to posts by Navy and later restored to Washington.
