Four Prisoners Escape from Sampaca County Jail
Four inmates, two white and two Black, escaped early Wednesday from Sampaca county jail. Among them are Tobe Devane, a man under death sentence for murder, and James Michell, a white man serving 15 years for criminal assault. A white boy serving six months for larceny also fled but was taken back by his father. Jos Mitchell, a white man, was later killed during the escape. Devane and the Black youth faced further peril as guards pursued them. The fugitives are at large, with reports tying them to Inez and Rex Theatre districts.

In New York this week Lucius N Littauer and his brother William Littauer were fined 1000 each and sentenced to six months jail for amugeling. Jail sentence suspended on payment of fine. They admitted importing valuable Jewish items from Venice intended as gifts for William Shetder's wife. They paid a government fine of 141000. C Averett of Abbotsburg Rincon county, a student at aRalolth business college, forged a 1500 check, was held up before he could cash it, and was allowed to return home with his father on grounds of mental instability.

The county mourns Squire Brooks and Rev J L Bennett who died within days of each other. Brooks, a long time public figure, died after a gastric ulcer at 7 pm Thursday and was buried at Marstville. Bennett, a noted preacher and educator advocate, died after a long career in the ministry and local service, his funeral also at Marstville. Both men received Masonic rites and left sizable families and legacies in the county. The Rex Theatre will feature an Orchestra tonight.
