Jealous motive ties Tryon killing to command to step aside
In Asheville area on December 26 a young farmer John Hayes, about 23, was shot by Frank Foster after Foster ordered, Step aside I want to shoot you. Hayes died instantly as a companion present remains unidentified. Foster fled. Sheriff Hill leads a manhunt with citizen help. A coroner's jury ruled the death unjustified. motives cited jealousy as the cause of the fatal shooting near Tryon.

French Passenger Ship Sunk With Many Passengers
Reports say the French steamer Willie de la Clotat was torpedoed in the Mediterranean with many aboard. Losses are estimated at 84, survivors picked up or taken to Malta.
