President Wilson asks belligerents and neutrals to exchange views on terms that could prevent renewal of war. He does not propose peace or mediation, only an early opportunity to gauge each side’s stance and pursue a future league of nations for lasting peace.

Nancy Shelton Wagner, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Carl Wagner, died when a frozen water back on a range exploded moments after a fire was built. Mrs Clyde Wagner, her aunt, held her when the blast threw the girl from her arms through a doorway into another room. Flying debris crushed her skull and arms as the range and kitchen suffered severe damage. The aunt escaped unharmed but stunned.
Marshville will soon have a first class hotel reopening under the direction of Mrs Fitster Wald and Miss Wrenn, two enterprising former Hoffman residents. They seek public cooperation, plan to install water and other conveniences to elevate the Marshville hospitality scene.
Governor Craig announces a Christmas grant of 10 dollars to 615 dependent families of prisoners in North Carolina. The State Prison Board allocates 6,150 dollars from prison earnings, with guarantees the funds would be returned if disapproved by the Legislature. The plan aims to support families while promoting prison modernization and continued earnings for state use.

Robert E. Gonzales, 28, paragraher on the Columbia Dispatch and second sergeant in the Second South Carolina National Guard, died of pneumonia in an El Paso hospital where his regiment is on border patrol. The body will be brought to Columbia for burial. He was son of Capt. and Mrs. William K. E. Gonzales and nephew of Ambrose E. Gonzales founder of The State. Survived by father, mother, an only sister Alida, an uncle Ambrose E. Gonzales, an aunt, Hattie Gonzales, and another uncle Henry Shivar.
Mrs. G. Hawneld oversees local sales of tiny seals sold at a penny each. The seals help seal letters and packages while supporting the Red Cross in its tuberculosis fight, and demand has been strong enough to require a new supply.
Conferences between How rules and public building committee members nearly settled a $30,000,000 omnibus public building bill for this session. The measure was reported last season but faced opposition that blocked action.

Eleven survivors of the Spanish steamship Plo IX, sunk near the Canaries in December, arrived in New York aboard the Buenos Aires. Reports say forty crew members, including the captain, were lost, while another group was saved by a French transport.
