A night watchman recalls a 1885 voyage aboard the Ben gal Tiger. Amid a fierce blizzard and freezing river ice, he falls between barges, fights to survive against the wheel and currents, is rescued after a perilous search, loses toes and two ribs, and eventually leaves river work for good.
