Census figures show Mellette County farms and crops in 1920
Preliminary 1920 census data for Mellette County lists 602 farms with 520 white and 82 colored farmers. Of these, 544 farms are owned or managed and 58 are tenant operated. Total farm land 192 acres 487 improved land 108,462 acres. land and buildings valued at 10,913,732 dollars. Domestic animals include 9,816 horses 112 mules 38,024 cattle 7,042 sheep 5,360 swine. Principal crops include 12,700 acres of corn yielding 181,297 bushels, 2,478 acres of wheat 23,870 bushels, oats 938 acres 20,454 bushels, rye 505 acres 7,038 bushels, hay 76,269 acres yielding 57,774 tons.

Constitution Day celebration urged in South Dakota
A Sioux Falls meeting of the Sons of the American Revolution urged statewide observance of Constitution Day on September 17, with extended school and college programs and ministers asked to preach on Sunday the 18th. Local communities were urged to hold proper exercises on Saturday the 17th.

Fatal Shooting on Rosebud Reservation Sparks Sale
Sunday night in St. Francis South Dakota Frank Black Spotted Horse shot Jesse Bordeaux four times with a 38 caliber revolver over a $7 debt from a horse race. Bordeaux died at once. Spotted Horse surrendered and is held at Valentine Nebraska amid threats from the dead boy’s father. Police say reduced Indian policing has bred lawlessness on the Rosebud Reservation.

Mellette County Exhibit Needs More Samples for State Fair
Mellette County prepares a large exhibit for the State Fair with many samples requested including late sweet corn, white dent corn, wheat, oats, flax and various fruits and seeds. The note promotes local livestock shipping associations in Murdo Okaton and Draper, enabling farmers to market cattle sheep and hogs through producer owned terminals with profit advantage and prorated dividends. Dr McDonald the White River Murdo dentist will be at the hotel for a full week starting September 12 to treat residents.
