Daily precipitation figures show a rainy period with values near 0.00 on most days and isolated totals. Cumulative precipitation from January 1 1919 to date reaches 6.55 inches, with yearly totals listed for 1913 to 1917 ranging from 17.96 to 32.42 inches. Observer Frep C Kiron notes the recorded totals and daily readings.
H A Oldham of Winner offers a $50 prize for the best display of field garden and orchard products at the Mellette County Fair in Wood September 18 9 and 20. The offer aims to encourage broad competition and more prizes may follow for individual farm displays.
Andy Pearson, who sold his Bute Valley farm, left for Texsam then Sweden to visit relatives for most of the year. He plans to return to Mellette county next spring to resume farming, expressing faith in the county’s soil and future. The Pioneer will follow his travels.
Last Tuesday evening G W Sawyer P C McDonald and son found N A Gerig’s barn on fire at the Indiana Ranch opposite Happy Hollow Church. The barn burned completely as neighbors tried to fight the flames. Mrs Gerig was away at a neighbor’s and a hog was also lost in the blaze.
Harold Oldham of Winner closes the largest single Rosebud deal by selling 6 372 acres north of Wood on Big White River to Oscar and Ed Haiech and Edward James for 96000 dollars. The sale sets a record for the Rosebud and spurs Mellette county interest amid railroad speculation and anticipated rail expansion.
Seventeen entries and broad county representation mark this year’s Pioneer Boys Acre Corn Growing Club contest. Prizes include $25 from Montgomery Dumber Co, a Trophy Cup for ten ears, and two prizes for Rosebud No 13 corn. Members list includes Willie Krieger Jake Krieger Harry Holzman Edwin Gustafson Rex Orr and others across Wood White River Kendall Murdo Schamber Cedarbutte and Schamber.
Paul Wildman, discharged 19? from the U S Navy after serving as Chief Yeoman on the U S S Plattsburg, returns to Wood with a 320 acre homestead project. Fellow veteran HM Larsen, fireman on the battleship Ah land, also back on furlough. Mrs A Burns and Ren Cross visit from Excelsior Springs to care for ill husband Joss Burne, who shows improvement.
