The record lists annual precipitation totals for 1913 to 1920 with values 17.96 19.57 32.42 18.82 18.21 1.58 20.82 28.15 and attributes the observations to Frep C Kiron as observer.
Four young people from the area—Dallas Moore, Lee McDonald, Jessie Sinkler, and Ed ith Sinkler—visited Carter for Christian Endeavor. On Main Street they were shot at and held up by a group of 15 to 20 youths, who were heavily intoxicated. The assailants allowed the group to continue home after learning there was no meeting. The piece denounces local moonshine as a greater societal menace than saloons.
The Pioneer editor thanks Wood and Mellette county readers for eight years of support and explains plans to upgrade the paper with a line type printer costing 3000 to 3500 dollars. A railroad arrival could hasten the change, with further improvements anticipated as business grows.
Wood Lodge No. 180 A F and A M paid off the remaining debt on their building with the final payment made Saturday. The lodge, organized in 1914, has grown to financial stability and owns its home free of debt, with plans to remodel or replace the building. The Friday night session was described as one of the most joyful in the lodge’s history.
The editor asks readers to suggest names for enrollment on the growing list and to help double subscriptions this year. Volume Ten begins next week as the paper pledges to boost Mellette county and the town of Wood and their institutions with improved reporting under challenging circumstances.
The program lists instrumental number, readings by Raymond Sawyer and Christine Ericksen, two quartets, current events by Ed Sinkler, a book review by Mrs. Tuell, and a debate on whether Wood should be incorporated with affirmative speakers Fred Kirch and Mr. Tuell and negative speakers Rev. Salter and Fred Sinkler.
Come to Wood forenoon session 9 30 to 10 30 for eye exams by the renowned Lange of Mitchell. He promotes the largest exclusive eye business in South Dakota and urges families to have children examined to avoid headaches, squinting, and aged appearance.
