Letters From Our Soldier Boys in the War Zone

Soldier Elmer C. Hellerson writes from Southampton England on Nov 30 1918 describing ship convoys across the English Channel to Le Havre France the 2000 to 3500 troops per trip 36 crossings a voyage five hours day runs guns not aboard the ship and twelve on watch in a crow’s nest. He notes nurse transport 1200 to 1800 American nurses several German prisoners trips and the ship’s speed 28 knots plus Liberty in France Thanksgiving meals and longing for home. He mentions English hostility toward Americans and anticipates return to the United States after armistice with hopes to be mustered out soon.

War Costs End 1918 Total U S Expenditures

Treasury estimates show the United States spent about 18.6 billion dollars on running the war government and aiding allies in the year ending December 31 1918. By year end total war costs reach about 824.5 billion dollars with only about a third paid in taxes and two thirds as loans to be repaid later.
