Weather Summary and Long-Term Precipitation Totals

Daily rainfall readings show scattered amounts with a total precipitation of 13.11 inches to date from January 1 1921. Long term yearly totals include 17.96 inches in 1913, 19.57 in 1914, 32.42 in 1915, 18.82 in 1916, 18.21 in 1917, 18.58 in 1918, 20.82 in 1919, and 28.15 in 1920. Fremt C Kirca, Observer.

Wood Light & Power Co. Faces First Major Outage

Last Friday the Wood Light and Power Co suffered its first serious accident when a connecting rod came loose, breaking the crank case and piston. The plant went dark and Wood has been without electric light since. Repairs were ordered by wire, shipped from the factory last Saturday, and are expected to arrive tomorrow. Once fixed, the company hopes to regain normal service for its patrons.

Masonic Lodge Plans Rebuild After Special Meeting

Local Masonic Lodge held a Friday meeting to approve preliminary steps for a new one story lodge hall before winter. Committees will study the proposal and report at the September 16th meeting. current building is worn and unfinished, and a stucco front is planned to enhance the town.

Mrs Gotlieb Bachman Dies After Lingering Illness

Mrs Gotlieb Bachman died at her home north of Wood on August 17 1921 after a long illness. Funeral services were held at her home last Sunday conducted by Rev Salter, with burial in the Episcopal cemetery south of town. Lena West born January 1888 in South Russia came to the United States at age fourteen with her parents settling in Henryetta Texas. She married Gotlieb Bachman and they had seven children six sons and one daughter. two children died in infancy. In 1902 the family moved to a homestead north of Wood South Dakota where they lived. Since arriving in South Dakota two sons died, one in the flu epidemic. Mrs Bachman suffered from tuberculosis and sought relief in New Mexico and Texas but did not improve. This spring she returned to Mellette county to be with her family. She leaves a husband three young sons and a sister. The community offers condolences. confidence in the doctor is noted as the best part of the prescription.

Couple to be wed in Omaha Greek church ceremony

Alex Abourezk of Ratoon New Mexico and Miss Mary Mickel plan to marry at the Greek church in Omaha next Monday August 29. Due to lack of a priest in Wood the ceremony will be held in Omaha with Mrs C Abourezk witnessing. The bride came from Syria with her sister Mrs C Abourezk and has helped in the Abourezk store at Mission. The groom is a prominent merchant of Ratoon.

Eastern Star Picnic Planned at Butte Creek

The local Chapter of the Eastern Star will host a picnic at Butte Creek on Wednesday August 31. Members from Winner and White River Chapters are invited to join, and all Masonic brothers are welcome to attend.

Wood Public Schools Begin Nine Month Term

The Wood Public Schools will start a nine month term on Monday September 5. E. H. Hamilton is again principal, Miss Erma Sturdevant will lead the Grammar grades, and Miss Jessie Sinkler will head the Primary room. One week remains of summer vacation before students resume studies.
