U. S. Weather Bureau reports weekly values with temperatures from Thursday to Wednesday and daily highs. It lists cumulative precipitation from January 1, 1920 to date as 2.08 inches and annual totals for 1913 through 1919, noting gaps in 1917 and 1918 data.
Mellette County Fair Association will meet at the printing office on Monday evening April 13 at 8 o'clock to elect officers for the coming year and plan the fall fair. President G. W. Sawyer urges attendance and ideas to stage the biggest county show.
The statue on the Marne is America's gift to France funded by popular subscription without solicitation. Contributions reach county teachers for forwarding to the County Superintendent Vernon R Branson at 50 Nassau St New York. deadline April 17.
Rev E C Salter of Wood has been named county representative for Meillette county by Rev L W Fifield head of the Interchurch World Movement Life Service Department. Salter will recruit and select young men to enter Protestant church service as pastors or missionaries, addressing a shortage of trained ministers nationwide.
The Wood service gathered ninety attendees with Sunday School at thirty eight. offerings for the Sioux Falls Orphans Home totaled $1423. At Happy Hollow eighty five attended and contributed $15.65 to the state orphanage. Pastor E Savrer invites continued attendance and service.
The Pioneer announces the 1920 Acre Corn Growing Club contest for Melville County youths aged ten to eighteen. Entries close May 22. First prize is a silver cup held by Raymond Sawyer with possible gold and silver medals for first and second. Seed for one acre provided to first time entrants. returning entrants supply their own seed.
A local chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star is being instituted with twenty charter members. Members of the White River Chapter of the OES are present to institute the new chapter. A banquet will follow at J. T. Hocking's home.
The Band of Wood held its initial practice at the Wood Garage last Saturday with about ten members present. Despite some lacking instruments the group made ample noise and showed enthusiasm under Leader Joneschiet, signaling a promising start and plans for summer street concerts.
The section notes unusually varied weather with cyclones dust storms blizzards floods and sleet storms nearby. It adds Fortunate residents of South Dakota and reports the Conrey sale held Wednesday drew a large crowd and sold well for good prices.
