Hon Charles Burke of Pierre is appointed Indian Commissioner succeeding Cato Selis. Burke previously served on the Committee of Indian Affairs in Congress and is regarded as well suited to the role due to his familiarity with Indian conditions and needs.
Last Saturday three entries were received for the Mellette County Pioneer Boys Acre Corn Growing Club. The organizers urge up to fifty more entries by May 1 and plan corn club films. Parents are asked to help enroll. no fees are charged. Early entrants include Jacob Krieger and Joseph Week and Melvin Week, all from Wood, South Dakota.
Deputy Sheriff Frank Richardson inspected a Brisco farm seven miles northeast of Wood and found two barrels of mash a boiler and a running still with a gallon and a half of liquor. Dick Kloke was jailed on a $1009 cash bond after waiving preliminary hearing. Two others Frank Kriebo and Vaughn Brisco were arrested next day and held on $1000 bond.
Last Saturday night Homer Helm, age about one year, wandered from the Bu ranch south west of Wooden town while his parents attended a local picture show. A search of fifty to sixty men with lanterns found him about one and a half miles from home at around 1 a.m. The child was unharmed and returned to his worried mother and relieved father.
Mellette County will host a series of specialists for extended work this year. April 13-17 Government Prairie Dog Specialist. April 7-9 George Valentine Poultry Demonstrations. April 25-30 J C Holmes Live Stock Improvement. May 5-11 Miss Rongstedt Home Demonstration Work. May 12-16 A L Ford Grasshopper Control. May 6-21 C L Starr Farmers Organizations. June 1-4 P P Banker Boys and Girls Club Work. June 13-18 Dr G S Weaver State Veterinarian. Don Livingston and Hugh Allen of the State Marketing Department at Pierre will also visit to study marketing conditions and plan cooperative organizations.
Last Saturday marked Wood’s first Dollar Day with ideal warm weather. The town crowded as merchants reported strong business and the theater sold out the five reel feature Under Four Flags twice. A Poultry Expert from State College spoke on poultry. a public sale at Green Feed Barn and a second show followed by Alice Brady in The Indestructible Wife. Admission 5e and 3bc.
A baby boy, child of Mr and Mrs Will Smith of the Cody neighborhood, was severely burned on the face and hands after coming into hot ashes last week. He was taken to Murdo for medical treatment and, at last report, was progressing as well as could be expected.
The Literary Society presents an April program at Wood with recitations by Dale Richardson Edith Sinkler Velma Galbraith Helen Abourezk and a debate led by E H Hamilton. The evening includes intermediate grades recitation and a student performance lineup.
