A blaze in the rear of the Palace hotel was quickly halted by prompt discovery and rapid fire department action. Surrounded by frame buildings and a strong wind, the flames threatened the business district, but water was applied within minutes and damage remained slight.
The state twine plant at the penitentiary produces 14 million pounds while farmers demand 16 million. Prison twine sells for 12 cents in carload lots, far below private price, and is reserved largely for South Dakota farmers with about 25 000 farm stockholders in 37 counties. Warden Reihfield says operating costs prevent a night shift, and profits would raise prices beyond the trust price.
A state committee led by CN Herreid of Aberdeen selects members to organize applicants for a U S military training camp at Fort Snelling in July and August. Expected turnout ranges from 500 to 1000 men with government covering uniforms rail fare and camp life expenses. Each trainee serves four weeks in July or August.
Osmund Jesfield leases 8000 acres of school and state land at a sale on Monday for an average price of 17.6 cents per acre totaling 1400 00 dollars. He holds 300 acres of deeded land 30400 acres under lease and 1000 acres of school land on expired leases. He has about 18000 grazing acres in the county and runs 5000 sheep. Despite a severe winter his losses remain near normal. He has profited in ten years in the sheep business.

Mo ss Sheatre manager Low Fein announces Birth of a Nation will be shown Thursday and next week at the Ary with full educational context. Parkhurst of New York and Dr FE Spaulding praise the film as highly educational and impactful for both youth and adults.
Local Guard members at the Pierre armory await orders after a governor directed call. Company K plus Aberdeen Lemmon Yankton Rapid City units mobilize to guard bridges and government property. The War Department has not announced departure details as a recruiting drive begins to reach 100 men.
Saturday night Manager Clark of the Star Theatre staged a benefit for the Lemmon band. Besides films the Lemmon orchestra played, drawing a large street concert crowd. After expenses the band was paid and Clark plans future benefit nights for various city aid societies.
CO A Bennett of First State Bank of Lemmon says farmers in the region are in better financial shape than ever. Money is plentiful and prospects for prosperity next year look bright as farm sales this winter show goods selling well. Sixty to seventy percent of farm purchases are cash at auctions, driven by high product prices and widespread livestock farming.
A farmer improves profit by cleaning wheat at home or at the elevator. After grading No 1 Northern, he earned 16 cents more per bushel and $6.40 for labor plus seven bushels of seed. Ward A Ostrander notes higher grades reduce price fluctuation and savings apply to other crops too.
A meeting at the Commercial Club rooms organized a Federal Farm Loan association for Perkins County. Not many farmers attended. another meeting is planned to complete organization and secure loan subscriptions. Officers elected include O. B. Quammen president Henry Miller vice president F O A Finch secretary treasurer. Directors named include Karl Koeppen Gee Hendel Henry Miller C1 Beyniton W die O S Quammen and Joe Meier, with two more directors to be elected at the Saturday meeting.
Miss Gladys Berry daughter of attorney Lovan Berry and Tra Shantz well known in the city were wed in Aberdeen on Tuesday March 27. Both are popular in the younger set. Berry worked at Horr jewelry store and Shantz manages the municipal saloon. They plan to return to Lemmon and make their home there. The Herald offers congratulations.
