Kinney reports arrival of about 1600 head of penhil cattle this year from sprue Texas. The account references unrest in Mexico, past conflicts, and historical figures tied to the era, noting devastation and disrupted commerce.
A committee of businessmen arranged for a Big Carnival Company to perform in Lemmon during mid August. Dates are tentative around August 13, with possible shows on the 15th, 11th, and another day. Talk also of adding an agricultural fair to create a Harvest Festival, details under consideration by the Budget Committee and Commercial Club. The carnival company is reputedly one of the largest on the road with attractions not yet seen in this area.
Two well known figures H S Stone and W C Vaughn received prison terms of two and a half and four years respectively in Washington State Federal prison for pushing counterfeit five pound pieces. Vaughn formerly a Minneapolis Brewing Company traveling rep, later ran a Aberdeen saloon as Malloy and Vaughn before moving to Washington and Great Falls Montana. Stone claimed civil engineering training but stayed in gambling as a “sure thing artist” and con man, notably assaulting gambler R L Scott to rob him of about 400 dollars before friends intervened. Both men were married, Stone re marrying his former wife after adjoining claims near Lemmon proved up.
A local birthday observance near the Neon in Moreau east of Inash drew a large crowd. A supper, patriotic address by W N McCaun, Lincoln Gettysburg speech by L N Yan, and music by the Glee Club led by Prof W N McCaun followed by Uncle Sam in regalia and a women’s quartet. Free ice cream and cake ended the enjoyable neighborhood gathering.
A sizable crowd traveled from here to Morristown to watch the McIntosh Giants clash on the Morristown grounds. Crow Skin pitched for McIntosh and Burkhart for the Giants as errors behind Burkhart cost the Giants the game. The Giants, despite efforts, failed to convert chances. McIntosh led in fielding and timely hits, with the crowd predicting a Sunday rematch back home.
South Dakota v Harry Lamb ended in a three year term in the state penitentiary at Sioux Falls. Lamb was convicted for violations of the state banking laws after a trial that defense argued showed mental imbalance. Jury verdict came after about an hour of deliberation, with Sheriff Hayward transporting the prisoner to Sioux Falls.
A large crowd attended a suffrage meeting at Levi hall on Sunday with Miss Kate Bower as the speaker. The account notes her quaint explanation of the suffrage documents and the audience’s engagement, mentioning the presence of other speakers and local attendees.
The company members return from encampment at Sparta Wy where drills, exercises, and presentations were completed. Thompson of the fiscal group teamed with Amstus for wrestling honors, with members showcasing strength and discipline during the event.
The 1914 forecast foresees rising auto sales and business growth with stable prices, a prosperous U.S. crop year, and a formally opened Panama Canal. It predicts turmoil in the Balkans, rapid Mexican activity, and further international strife. It warns of widespread postmaster dismissals and upheaval across the republic as politics churns.
The Northwestern Baptist Association meeting reports governance actions including election of moderator and secretary, constitutional by law reforms, and devotional and sermon highlights. Rev TH Hagen and Rev S P Shaw address Sunday school and state convention, with officers Mrs. Cod Doty and Rev Ben Johnson noted among participants.
