Representative Anthony of Kansas and allies respond to charges over Judge Hook. Critics argue the late Justice Harlan stood as a leading proponent of equal rights for African Americans, and view Hook as an opponent of Negro rights.
President Taft did not send Judge Hook’s name to the Senate for the Supreme Court seat after a White House meeting with all cabinet lawyers. A further probe of Hook’s record, especially a Kansas railroad case alleged to restrict negro rights, led to postponing the nomination. Secretaries Knox Nagle Fisher Stimson and Attorney General Wickersham attended the conference.
In New York February a search of Ed win Hawley's safe deposit vault failed to reveal a will. Reports say Hawley destroyed a 1903 will and planned to consolidate estate interests. Authorities suggest the Hawley estate may not exceed 20 million dollars, with stock dispersed among foreign holders.
