Lee College wins 1.24 million education grant
The U.S. Department of Education awarded Lee College a five year grant of 1.24 million under Title III Strengthening Institutions. The plan funds redesign of developmental reading writing and math courses a multimedia teaching center and expanded faculty advisement with networked microcomputers. The college will begin improvements next spring pending budget approval.

ACE club hosts Fall Fiesta fundraisers and campus talks
The All Can Excel Club plans two Fall Fiesta booths and an Oct. 28 outdoor fundraiser with interpreters for deaf students at the Haunted House. They sponsor a Lee College Forensic Team program in Moser Hall with two speakers on disability and society and provide interpreters for a half hour encore by ACE club members. Silent auctions donate all profits to the club.

Guthmiller to Lead U S Volleyball Delegation at Nationals
Lee College athletic director Karen Guthmiller took a two week leave in September to head delegations for the Youth Nationals U S Volleyball team in Puerto Rico. She led the NORCECA qualifying team to five wins over Cuba Virgin Islands Dominican Republic Puerto Rico and Mexico before disqualification over ineligible players. Guthmiller praised the experience and noted her prior U S representation in 1993 1989 and 1986 events.

At the Oct 6 meeting the executive board outlined pros and cons of running for a state post at the Texas Junior College SGA convention. Pros include greater exposure for Lee College and stronger junior college ties. cons list more responsibility, time, travel costs, and risk of failure. Alicia Jahan-Tigh opposed the idea while bylaws move to require two consecutive meetings for voting and two meetings monthly for membership. Debbie Ervin was elected Student Congress treasurer.

Stockman Targets Brooks In Lee College Speech
Underdog Republican Steve Stockman attacked incumbent Democrat Congressman Jack Brooks at Lee College Tucker Hall on October 4.
