Robert C. Cloud will leave his post on March 15 after a 14 year tenure as Lee College president. Named in 1976, his era included major program expansions and landmark projects despite controversy and ongoing legal matters linked to a scrap metal investigation and a harassment suit involving college employees.
Facing President Cloud’s imminent departure, the Board of Regents vote to hire the Association of Community College Trustees for a four to six month executive search. ACCT will field an advisory committee, screen candidates nationwide to 15, then five, perform background checks, arrange interviews, and assist visits, before the board makes final selection. The interim president will come from outside the college and cannot be a permanent candidate.
LC leaders and faculty members voiced varied reactions to President Robert C. Cloud’s resignation. Regents chair John Adams praised his work, noting enrollment stability and stable tax rate. Faculty head Don Perry and vice president Jerry Alston offered cautious support, while Guild president Muriel Tyssen hoped for healing and renewal.
Milton Johnson, a Lee College chemistry instructor, received a gold watch for 30 years of service at a Jan 5 faculty meeting. He earned degrees from East Texas State Teachers College and taught at Panola County College before joining Lee College in 1955. Colleagues praised his high standards and strong care for students, noting numerous former students visiting to thank him.
Ed Monk reports spring enrollment fell 63 percent from 3 427 in 1985 to 3 210 as registration lags for industrial contract classes while classroom enrollment in the academic division rises over 3 percent. Weekly contact hours up slightly to 35 776. most area colleges see declines amid tuition hikes.
Lee College district patrons vote April 5 to elect three regents to replace Reggie Brewer Claudia Smith and Leonard Stasney. Smith seeks re election while Brewer and Stasney do not. Filing Feb 4 through March 5 in Rundell Hall business office. Election results announced April 7 with no run off.
LC seeks new liability insurance after multiple rejections threaten field trips and sports events. Regents will review new bids at February meeting after St Pauls Insurance Co declined renewal following a 1984 fatal accident. Van rentals now cover travel, with eight vans in limbo and environmental science trip to the Grand Tetons canceled due to costs.
