College President Warns Hackers Target Academic Systems
Wilber Miller of Drake University testifies before a House Judiciary subcommittee on crime arguing that campus computer systems are highly permeable and vulnerable to hacking because they are designed for access. He backs a proposal to make illegal tapping of files over $5000 a federal offense, noting that such intrusions threaten students' right to education in an accessible environment. Twenty-three states already criminalize unauthorized entry, but no federal law exists.
