Lee College at fifty I am hopeful for its next era

As a Regent I recall building tours with my father and summer courses that saved my career. Enrollment has surged from 2800 in 1977 to 4000 in 1982 83 and could exceed 5000 soon. The faculty is strong salaries high and the reactivated foundation funds scholarships. New programs hotel motel management fashion merchandising EMTs and baseball illustrate rapid growth. Tax base pressures and higher taxes threaten expansion but creative planning can fund raises and new facilities including the library and gym. The foundation and community support remain key as we shape the college first fifty years and beyond.

The college named Maude Moler Hall in tribute to a gift. Strahan established the Lee College Foundation to raise scholarships. The late 1960s saw new programs including a Texas Department of Corrections education plan in Huntsville, cooperative industrial education with Goose Creek, and a hearing impaired program. Growth included Moody Foundation funding for a new administrative center and expansion of TV-technical buildings as leadership anticipated renewal in 1971.

New look LC clubs change in '60s

Other active groups included the Organization of Arabian Students lasting until 1968 and Rho Epsilon Beta spanning 1960 to 1969 with a cryptic service role and a distinctive insignia.
