President Roosevelt refused to appoint Crawford of Chester South Carolina a second lieutenant in the regular army citing a broken engagement as contrary to the service's best interests. Crawford served in the Spanish American War as a captain of volunteers and was slated to join the infantry with other officers in the Philippines.
The ceremony joined Miss Emmieppeltine of Kershaw and Mr Sidney EHson at the home of Mr Witty with Rev Joseph W. Dendy officiating. The event featured floral arches, a Mendelssohn march, and a reception with numerous gifts, while Crawford’s last minute change and plan shifts are noted and the couple will reside in Kershaw.
A railroad era notice reports that South Carolina volunteers from the Spanish American War may receive a $100 bounty for honorable discharges, with $160 for service abroad. Efforts led by WL Boyd Evans and Capt Capers aim to file warrants with Washington officials, seeking funds from the old War Between the States statute now affirmed by courts. In total 2,891 men served across the First and Second regiments and the heavy battery, with many never collecting due to nonhonorable discharges or missing records. Many veterans remain financially improved, yet never regain the prewar wealth and freedom of muster out day.

The land bordered by McCorkle Wylie Williams and Sims lands. Gus Armstrong residence noted. Strict enforcement promised. Dated Oct 28 1901.
In Elizabethtown Tennessee on November 11 Frank Kidwell aged 2% days killed his sweetheart Ada Thompson aged 16 and then killed himself. The tragedy is attributed to the girl's father forbidding a visit and her refusal to marry him. Both families are prominent.
