May 15 Fort de France reports St Vincent's Mont Pelee eruption creating dire conditions. Potomac sails to assist, lava and ash cover St Pierre, hundreds dead, looting and rescue efforts under way. Potomac, Suchet, Valkyrien coordinate relief. evacuations bring 459 to Martinique with later rescues.

Pardon Granted for Dying Man After appeal

The governor pardoned Abner Harris, a dying man in Edgetich, who was convicted in July 1900 of stealing from a store. Harris served since November 1899 and faced three years on the chain gang. His conviction was based on circumstantial evidence amid illness leading to death at home. County officials and others urged the pardon so he could die at his home.

Smallpox Outbreak Reported Near Wingate Farm

Special to The Observer from Monroe May 15 reports a smallpox outbreak on Henry Williams's Wingate area farm. John Bass first ill, Dr Armfield and county physician J M Blair confirmed the disease. Fourteen cases, including two enslaved families, were found with quaran tines observed and no new cases expected near Wraxhaw.

Special to The State Augusta Georgia May 14 Col Andrew Pickens Butler of Aiken county died at 8 am at his Butler home after paralysis of the heart Saturday night He was 70 years old He leaves two married daughters a son and several grandchildren Funeral set for 11 am tomorrow at Sweetwater Church near Aiken Butler belonged to Edgefield’s famed clan and was related to Gen M C Butler He served as captain major lieutenant colonel in the Civil War and held state posts including agriculture commissioner and state senator until 1890 He remained prominent in South Carolina affairs and had lived at his Savannnah river plantation since 1896

Jailer Fatally Shot in Roanoke Jail Escape Bid

In Roanoke Virginia on May 14 1 jailer Craig was assaulted by two prisoners during a corridor encounter as they attempted to break out. In the struggle Bol Payne was shot and fatally injured by the jailer who was attacked as the inmates attempted escape with ten otters recaptured later.

Kitchener reports Boer losses and British captures

London May 13 Kitchener's weekly report lists 19 Boers killed 9 wounded 502 captured and 900 surrendered. British forces seized 600 rifles 157 wagons 40 horses and 4 800 head of cattle as Gen. Jan Hamilton's column swept Kitchenberg district and southwestern Transvaal locating 850 prisoners and most stock. De La Rey forces reduced by 890 since March 8 action at Rovira Fontein and Methoen captured.
