In Belair Maryland March Miss Annie Mellvaine with disheveled hair and a cocked revolver led a two hundred strong mob to the jail last night. They dragged Lewis Harris a Black man who assaulted Miss Mellvaine from his cell and hanged him by a tree. Harris confessed. The mob shot him multiple times. Two bystanders were wounded by the sheriff during the raid.
Harrisburg March 26 The annual report by the chief of the State bureau of mines summarizes three decades of mine deaths in Pennsylvania. Between 1870 and 1889 about 4,575 lives were lost in and around anthracite mines, with rates rising across decades from 3.59 per 1000 to 8.14 per 1000 employed.
