It also reports a murder allegation near Orangeburg and muses on time and change.
A speech by Mr. Brooks and allied discussion in the House on the bill for territorial government for Nebraska and Kansas. Arguments center on slavery, constitutional rights, unity of the West and South, and the original policy of the country. Attention is directed to the ververtionment of Mr Koiman Charleston. Our country friends who visit the City should call on Mr K when they come. He keeps the largest and most complete stock of paper hangings in Charleston.
Compositor Hensdorman explains the misprint in the Sting utes of the Baptist Association. He claims no fraud was intended and suggests the error may come from a missing portion or accidental omission by the copyist. He writes from Conocan North Carolina dated March 94, apologizing for the covered matter.
The will of the late Judge Boyce discloses gifts totaling ten thousand dollars to the Orphan House for Graniteville schooling and thirty thousand dollars to the Charleston College for educating poor young men. If Graniteville ever closes the Graniteville school funds revert to Charleston College. Executors named are Judge O Neall Rev J P Boyer AG Rose and Col Whitesides. The estate is valued at just under one and a half million.
A citizen visits Columbia to draw money from a Hank and meets a gambler who bets him. After an initial win the gambler proposes to bet for his friend, the man is pressed into accepting, and the affair ends with a clash and a chase toward Samterville. Three hundred dollars change hands amid threats and pursuit as the incident unravels.
Deter Stein, a stout vulgar Dutchman, posed as a watchmaker and jeweler in Mendleton four to five weeks ago. He gained several gold and silver watches and other pieces, then vanished with them. He is described as about 40, 5 feet 10 inches, with small womanish features and a wide chin whisker. A brother, Stein, is said to be in Savannah. he is connected to a lock built for St Michael's steeple in Charleston. Information to Judged with J.D. Wright at Mendleton is urged.
